Keywords & Miscellaneous
The previous chapters cover the basic rules, but there a few “gotchas” that modify the basic rules you’ve learned so far. The ones that will come up often are covered in this Chapter, while the ones that are less common are covered in Appendix B.
Stories and some Heroes have SUPPORT effects. SUPPORT means “use this effect from your Hand.”
If a SUPPORT effect doesn’t say what happens to the card it is on (e.g. “Return this to Hand” or “play this”), Discard the card after the SUPPORT effect resolves.
Note that this means, for Heroes with SUPPORT effects, you generally have to choose between playing them to your Active Heroes area, or using their SUPPORT effect.
Some cards have a star icon before their Name. This indicates that they are Unique cards. You can’t play a Unique card while you already have a card with the same Name in play.
You can use SUPPORT effects on a Unique Hero while you already have another copy of that Hero in play.
The first time in a game that you reveal a Secret from your Vault, you must choose a Secret that does not have the Climactic icon. Climactic Secrets can only be your second Secret revealed, when your foe is one Quest away from winning.
REACTION effects spell out what trigger must occur for them to be used. Using them is always optional. REACTIONS resolve after the triggering circumstances resolve.
INTERRUPT effects function similarly to REACTION effects: they spell out the triggering circumstances (although a few of them may say “At any time …”); using them is optional; and if both players want to react to the same trigger, their resolutions alternate, starting with the off-turn player.
The main difference between INTERRUPTs and REACTIONs is that INTERRUPT effects resolve before the triggering circumstance resolves, instead of after.
Cards with the same Name are not cumulative with each other. So if you use a “(1/turn)” or “(1/game)” effect, other copies of that same card don’t let you bypass that limitation.
Likewise, multiple copies of cards with the same Name can’t be used together to react multiple times to a single trigger with REACTION or INTERRUPT effects.
Heroes can use “While Active” effects while they are in play, i.e. in your Active Heroes area.
Place or Pursuit cards are only Active when they are the right-most card in your Scenery Area.
Place cards with “While Visited” effects can use those effects as long as they are in your Scenery Area (i.e. not your Reserve Area).
When a card gets “Destroyed,” it does not go into any of the standard game zones, such as the Discard Pile. Instead, set it far to the side of the game in a new Destroyed Zone, where it can be a reminder that (if Unique) it prevents other copies of same-Name cards from being played or used for SUPPORT effects.
If a Keyword is not found in this section, it has no “default” effect, but only matters when other cards refer to it.
Base
Places with the Base keyword can’t be included in your Deck, but you start with one of them Active in your Scenery Area. They cannot be Discarded or Destroyed (they are excluded from any effects that would do so).
Starter X
Heroes with the Starter (X) keyword can go in your Deck normally, but one of them can also start the game Active.
X refers to the number of cards you get to start the game with in your Hand, which is independent of your Reload X keyword that will dictate what you Draw at the end of your turns.
Bounty X
When a Hero with the Bounty X keyword is Discarded or Destroyed from an Active Heroes area or Contest Pile, the foe of the owner of that Hero can Invest X. (Some Heroes with Bounty also clarify the keyword with Destroyed X, detailing a greater number that their foe can Invest if the Hero gets Destroyed rather than merely Discarded.)
Coveted
Duchess Meli is a character in the world of Udacha: Anglinn who is fought over by all four main game factions, who each desire her for their own purposes. As such, cards representing her have a special Coveted keyword.
When a card with Coveted is played or has its SUPPORT effect used, if the player’s foe has any cards with the same Name in play, the foe’s Active copy of the card gets Discarded, representing that their foe has seized influence over the entity for now.
If a Coveted card gets Destroyed, neither player can play that card Name or use SUPPORT effects on it for the remainder of the game.
Seek X
When an effect instructs you to Seek X for a card of certain description(s), you reveal X cards from the top of your Deck (or until your Deck is empty). If a revealed card or cards match the description, you can take one such card into Hand. Shuffle the remaining cards and put them at the bottom of your Deck.
